Chapter Sixteen

On the Beach

Jade stood on the beach waiting for Dimmer to emerge from the ocean. It was a beautiful evening, not hot even though it was moving further into summer. That was probably because a fresh breeze was blowing in off the water, cooling things down considerably.

She remembered her first time at the beach, how she and Kendis had stood with their arms around each other gazing out at the incredible blue water, watching the sun glint off the dancing waves. It was wonderful, right on up until the creatures came from the ocean and chased them, trying to catch them for lunch - or dinner.

She felt Kendis’ arms come around her waist, and she looked over her head up into his eyes. He smiled down at her and gave her a kiss on her forehead.

“Hmm… salty.” He licked his lips and grinned. “I like salt in my women. Makes ‘em spicier.”

She chuckled. “Just as long as it’s only one woman, and as long as it’s me,” she teased.

“Goes without saying,” he rumbled softly as he nuzzled her neck.

“Hey, Jade! Want me to come beat that boy off for you?” hollered Alex from his position several feet away, where he sat on a large towel with Ro sipping iced tea. Ro, of course, was slurping down iced coffee.

Jade pulled away from Kendis long enough to stick her tongue out at him. “What do you think, big brother? Do I look like I want him beaten off?” she yelled back with a laugh. Alex had always teased her about boys, promising to clobber them for her if they got fresh.

Ro snickered and gave Alex a gentle jab to his shoulder. “Way too late for that, lover. Might as well git used to it. You couldn’t git ‘em apart wit’ a pry-bar.”

Jade heard chuckling coming from the other side of her and Kendis, where Penny sat with Reece, and Deidre sat with Will. They all had been teasing back and forth since getting there earlier.

It was the first day of the weekend, and when Jade received the message from Dimmer that they needed to speak with her at the beach, they’d decided to pack a picnic and go with her and Kendis. Jade had kept her word and introduced Penny and Deidre to Reece and Will. They seemed to be hitting it off with each other pretty well in the two weeks since they’d met, and Jade was pleased about that.

She watched Louis and Hester strolling together farther down the beach, and though she didn’t see them right then, Tally, Journey, and Dots were romping around somewhere.

The sun was setting and casting vivid red, orange, and yellow light across the water from behind them, turning the little white wave caps into flashing colored ones. As it sank below the horizon, the light leached from the ocean, and the stars began blinking on in the darkening skies. The largest moon, Lunatoo, would be rising soon, with Rim having already risen and started on its nightly trek toward the west in full phase.
